This set of two\u003cbr\u003efeatures his studies of the Japanese quail (uzura) — one print showing a pair\u003cbr\u003esheltering beneath a flowering stem, the other a single bird feeding head-down\u003cbr\u003eamong the grasses with its companion just entering the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost of the bird species throughout this collection were native to Japan, with a\u003cbr\u003efew domesticated and some imported cage birds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBairei was born and lived in Kyoto. He was apprenticed to the Maruyama printer\u003cbr\u003eNakajima Raishō at the age of eight. He was a pupil of the Shijō artist Shiokawa\u003cbr\u003eBunrin and followed the Nanga school tradition.
