Antique Fern Botanical Print - Vintage Hart's Tongue & Bladder Fern Wall Art

We were lucky enough to pick up a small, well-cared-for collection of 19th-century botanical fern prints. This particular plate is a faithful reproduction of a hand-coloured naturalist illustration by Edward Joseph Lowe, from his study of the British ferns and their varieties (mid-19th century). It shows two choice native varieties side by side — a forked form of the brittle bladder fern (Cystopteris fragilis var. furcans), with its lacy, finely divided frond, and a striking kidney-shaped form of the hart's-tongue (Scolopendrium vulgare var. reniforme), whose broad, undivided leaf makes a bold and beautiful contrast.

Lowe captured the botanical detail with remarkable skill, and while the work is more than 150 years old it still feels wonderfully modern. It brings a natural, timeless touch to your home and is an ideal choice for anyone who loves botanical illustration.
